How to apply minoxidil properly (and 7 mistakes that slow results)

How you apply minoxidil matters as much as how often. The goal is simple: the full dose, on a dry scalp, right where the thinning is. Here's how to do it with each format, and the mistakes that most often get in the way.
How to apply minoxidil solution
Dose: 1 mL, twice a day (men), roughly 12 hours apart.
- Start with a dry scalp. Part your hair where it's thinnest.
- Fill the dropper to the 1 mL line. If it's over, squeeze the extra back into the bottle.
- Apply a few drops at a time along the part. Then make a new part about 1 cm over and repeat until the whole thinning area is covered.
- Spread it gently with your fingertips. There's no need to rub hard.
- Wash your hands with soap and water, and screw the dropper back on tightly.
Let it dry before you put on a hat, and apply your night dose 2 to 4 hours before bed so it's dry by the time you lie down.
How to apply minoxidil foam
Dose: half a capful. Men twice a day, women once a day.
- Run your fingers under cold water and dry them. The foam melts on warm skin.
- Hold the can upside down and dispense half a capful onto your fingers or a cool dish.
- Part your hair and massage the foam into the scalp, not the hair. Make new parts until the thinning area is covered.
- Wash your hands well and put the cap back on.
If you've just showered, towel-dry so the skin of your scalp is dry first.
The routine that works
- Same times every day. Tie it to something you already do, like brushing your teeth.
- Leave it on for about 4 hours before you wash your hair, swim or do a sweaty workout.
- Style afterwards. Gel, spray and mousse are fine once it has dried.
- Scalp only. Keep it off your face and out of your eyes. If it gets in your eyes, rinse with plenty of cool water.
7 mistakes that slow results
1. Quitting during the shed
Extra shedding in the first weeks is the most common reason people give up, often right before things start to improve. Here's why it happens.
2. Judging it too early
Hair grows about 1 cm a month. Give it a full four months (men) or six months (women), and judge with photos rather than the mirror. See the full timeline.
3. Putting it on your hair
Minoxidil works through the skin. If it sits on your hair, it dries there and does nothing.
4. Using more than the dose
More won't speed things up. It makes itching and irritation more likely, and the extra can run onto your forehead and face.
5. An on-and-off routine
Missing the odd dose is fine; just carry on with the next one and don't double up. But on-and-off use gives on-and-off results.
6. Going to bed with it wet
Wet minoxidil rubs off onto your pillow and then your face, where you don't want extra hair. Apply your night dose 2 to 4 hours before bed.
7. Running out
A gap of a few weeks can set you back. Reorder when you open your last bottle, or choose a 12-month pack so you're covered for the year.
Common questions
Should I apply minoxidil to wet or dry hair?
Dry. A wet scalp dilutes it and makes it run. Towel-dry first, especially with foam.
Can I colour or perm my hair?
Yes. Wash the minoxidil out first, skip it on the day of the treatment, and restart 24 hours later once your scalp feels normal.
How long does one bottle last?
About a month for men at 1 mL twice a day. If yours runs out much sooner, you're probably using more than the dose.
Will it make hair grow on my face?
It can if minoxidil reaches your face, usually from your hands or pillow. Wash your hands after applying and let it dry before bed. If it happens, stop and see a doctor.
